Happy 4th Of July

Here we are, celebrating another 4th of July. This is a time not only for celebration, but let’s remember what the 4th means to us as Americans.

We should remember that our founding fathers fought for our independence from British rule to give us more rights and freedoms. These freedoms were meant for us as individuals, not the freedom of the government to impose it’s will on us.

I know it’s hard putting it all together as you watch the news each night. That’s mostly because there is so much going on in the world , that little coverage is given to any one subject. But if you think about a particular subject that just makes your blood boil, you can start putting two and two together.

My main concern is taxes. So every time I watch a news program I listen for the government decisions that include raising my taxes. Taxes on certain unhealthy foods, taxes on employer benefits, cell phone usage, as well as raising taxes on alcohol, tobacco and gasoline.

Maybe your particular interest goes to education, the environment, health care, employment or some other area. But if you listen carefully and focus on your subject of interest you will hear the proposals for change. Change that includes more involvement by our government and less control for you.

I think it’s important that we all know something about how our constitution is supposed to protect us, as well as how our government violates parts of it for their own benefit almost everyday.

So follow this link to our constitution, www.law.cornell.edu/constitution and see what it’s all about. Don’t read it all at once but do read it.

So while you are celebrating, reflect on why you are able to celebrate today. Happy 4th!!
