I suppose that everyone has their own idea as to what makes someone famous. I know people who are all but obsessed with one famous personality or another. For some people it’s sports figures making millions of dollars a year, while for others it’s a movie and/or TV star. I’ve seen friends cry because something bad happened to a star they liked. I mean, when something bad happens to people you naturally feel for them. However, I have a problem with people who would get emotional about a football player who gets seriously hurt in a car accident but has no reaction if the same thing happens to a friend or family member.
I’m not much of a sports buff, except for the WWE, that’s World Wrestling Entertainment, for the non-fans. I certainly don’t hold them in high esteem or allow my emotional state to change because one of them gets married or gets a divorce. I did have a favorite, a few years ago, named Bill Goldberg or “Goldberg”, as he was known in the ring. However, it wasn’t that I thought he was some kind of hero or god, it was his attitude that I liked. When Goldberg came to the ring you knew that it wasn’t just a bunch of theatrics. He was the same in the ring as out, he had the attitude that said he was going to get it done and then move on. His exit line was “Who’s next”, thereby showing he was done here and ready for the next challenge. Outside the ring he was a giver. He loved to visit the children in hospitals and help others less fortunate. He didn’t make a big deal out of who he was or try to pretend he was better than everyone else. He left the ring years ago and although I was disappointed I didn’t cry about it or have a bad day.
There have been others I’ve “liked” for basically the same reasons. It’s about an attitude and being real. It’s about being someone that kids can really look up to. I don’t understand getting gaga over some sports figure just because he does his job. I think you have to look at the whole person on the job and off. On the job, whether that be acting or playing sports or whatever, do they perform better than their peers? How do they treat their peers on and off the job? Are they good parents, siblings and friends? Do they break the law or think they are above the law?
All I’m saying is that before we make someone famous, by means of our adoration, we should be sure it’s deserved. There are plenty of people whether famous or not, who deserve our attention and many of us can start by looking at our parents.
There is a guy named John Cena, another wrestler, who I now like. Besides being a great wrestler, he is a great admirer and supporter of our troops. He has made several trips to Iraq and Afghanistan to perform for the troops and also takes time to visit them in veterans hospitals. It seems that everyone who knows him, or has known him, describes him as “real”. He is a truly nice guy who loves his family, friends and fans. These are the kind of famous people I can respect and encourage my grandchildren to look up to.
